Shama- Adult Literacy Program:

The SHAMA (شمع) – ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM is a sister project of “Love to give” by Mr. Hafeez Bilwani designed to offer non-formal literacy, numeracy, and tech

literacy training. It primarily targets the family members of LLCF students in community members with no formal schooling, with a special emphasis on mothers, and out-of-school girls. Beyond traditional education, the program aims to impart life skills, emphasizing love, peace, and harmony to create a more holistic approach to community development.

Aims and objectives:

This program’s goal is to provide basic reading, writing, and numeracy skills training and lessons to young, adult, and elderly people, primarily women, in the form of non-formal literacy classes. The program’s specific objectives are:

  • Tocontribute: to the development of a positive learning environment for students attending the LLCF by improving the literacy skills of their female family members, especially their mothers, and increasing tech literacy in the community.
  • Tofoster: active social engagement of community members, primarily women, by improving their literacy skills.
  • To make positive improvements in localcommunities: by providing educational opportunities to citizens, primarily women, on health and hygiene practices.
  • Toteach: lessons of love, peace, and harmony and coexisting with each other as taught in Project Love 2 Give.

Program Content and Teaching Material:

The program’s content and teaching materials are developed in cooperation with the technical partner, the Literate Pakistan Foundation, which is actively involved in the curriculum’s design and responsible for the production of materials. The literacy module is based on the ‘Jugnoo Sabaq’ curriculum, developed by the Literate Pakistan Foundation to teach literacy in Urdu. This curriculum is used in literacy programs at public schools and adapted for non-formal contexts in peri-urban and rural areas.

The Jugnoo Sabaq curriculum comprises six workbooks, one for basic numeracy and three urdu books for phonetics-based sound recognition and basic literacy skills and 2 English workbooks for basic English Literacy. These workbooks are produced in Urdu ( Except the English Workbooks) and distributed as follows:

Participants learn to associate words with their respective sounds, become aware of vowels and consonants, trace the alphabet, write letters and characters, and form short words of one or two letters. The content is arranged to feature frequently used letters first. The second book teaches participants to join letters and construct more complex words of three or four letters. Participants learn about diacritics and how the addition of special characters can change the meaning of words. Learners can write simple sentences, convert them into paragraphs, and later, into a letter or a story. Participants learn to read and write English Alphabets and two and three letter words using phonics approach for learning. Book 2 teaches participants to construct more complex words of three or four letters and simple sentences. The book support learners as they phrase more complex texts and includes numeracy exercises.

Recruitment and Training of Teachers:

Teachers will be paid and employed on a part-time basis, and they are members of the community, ensuring comprehensive knowledge of the local context. All teachers will be made to take Training of Trainers (ToT) course by Literate Foundation Pakistan amounting to eight training hours distributed over two half-days of training.

A pre-service training session takes place before the commencement of classes, with another in-service training session six weeks later, midway through the phase.

Program Location and Class Schedule:

Classes for the SHAMA – ADULT LITERACY PROGRAM will be conducted at the LLCF JM Campus. The program will have male teachers for men and female teachers for women. The class schedule is as follows:

Women’s Classes 5:00 PM  6:00 PM 6:00 PM  7:00 PM
Men’s Classes 7:00 PM- 8:00 PM 8:00 PM  9:00 PM

This schedule is designed to accommodate the needs of male participants who will attend classes after coming from work, ensuring accessibility and convenience for all learners.
